Healthy Oatmeal Chocolate Chunks: Perfect Packable Snack

We love Aldi’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chunks! Aldi’s doesn’t have a lot of ingredients, are decently clean, and are tasty. However, there are usually only five or six in the bag for $4.00. Additionally, they do have palm oil, which I try and avoid if I can.

I also want to take a moment to say that I am not a mom who is so strict with my kid’s eating that they never have any seed oils or artificial ingredients. I let my kids eat things I normally wouldn’t give them at birthday parties or grandparent’s homes. So don’t think that I’m super perfect with feeding my kids. They know what Doritos and Skittles are. When we are at home I watch everything much closer. It’s the balance I’ve landed on and it works for us. I think any healthy change in trying to improve your or your child’s diet is a positive one. There so much overwhelming information out there and if you change everything all at once it most likely won’t stick. Start with one thing that you know you can change, and build from there!

Anyway, back to the chunks. This is a really easy recipe and my kids will finish the entire batch in a day. The ingredients are things that I like to have as pantry staples. I use coconut sugar to replace white sugar and coconut oil to replace canola oil a lot. The best brand of oats I have found is One Degree Oats. You can buy them at Costco or Amazon. They’re a splurge for me, but we use oats for a lot of breakfast meals and I want to make sure they are glyphosphate free. (I have also purchased Bob Mills brand.)

Nibs are my new favorite thing to sneak into chocolate things. They’re pretty bitter on their own. They are also anti-inflammatory! I try and use them when I put in chocolate in a recipe. They are pretty tiny so it’s easy to hide them in whatever. The rest of the ingredients are pretty straight forward.

These don’t take very long to make. They make way more than the Aldi bag and at a much cheaper price. I hope you make them as a new lunch box snack addition!

  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Pulse oats to create coarse flour and combine with the rest of the ingredients in a bowl, except for the chocolate chips.
  3. Add oil and honey and then fold in the chips. Mixture should be crumbly.
  4. Spray mini muffin baking pan with avocado oil or lightly grease with butter. Press mixture into pan all the way flush with the top.
  5. Bake 10-12 minutes until slightly golden. Let cool completely before removing them from the pan.
